The Bibliotheca is a plain, systematic retelling of Greek myth from the creation of the gods to the aftermath of the Trojan War. It is arranged as genealogy and narrative rather than poetry, which makes it the nearest thing antiquity left us to a reference work.
It was long attributed to Apollodorus of Athens, a grammarian of the second century BCE, but the text cites authors who wrote later. Scholars now date it to the first or second century CE and call its anonymous compiler Pseudo-Apollodorus.
Legacy
Because it preserves versions the poets only allude to, it is the first place mythologists look and the backbone of most modern handbooks.
