Cronus&Saturn
Time, Harvest, & the Golden Age
Cronus
The Devouring Time
Sickle, scythe, hourglass, serpent
Youngest Titan; he castrated Uranus and ruled the Golden Age until Zeus overthrew him.
Ruthless and paranoid — he swallowed his own children to defeat a prophecy.
Blood offerings at the Cronia, a harvest festival of licence and misrule.
Time that consumes everything it produces.
Saturn
Saturnus, Lord of the Sown
Sickle, corn, ship's keel, the wool-wrapped feet
An ancient Italic sowing-god whose temple housed the state treasury, the aerarium.
A benevolent, wealth-giving sovereign of a vanished Golden Age.
The Saturnalia — gifts, feasting, and the ritual loosening of social order.
A lost age of plenty, and the moral licence to remember it.
Syncretism Analysis
Cronus is a devouring tyrant; Saturn is a nostalgic golden-age king. Rome turned the most feared Titan into the patron of its happiest festival — and parked the treasury in his temple.
